RALEIGH, NC – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (9-7, 0-2 ACC) dropped their second straight Atlantic Coast Conference game on Thursday night as the #8 NC State Wolfpack handed the Panthers a 63-34 defeat inside the Reynolds Coliseum. The Panthers were held to a season-low 22.2% shooting in the loss.
After a quick 5-0 spurt to start the game for the Wolfpack, the Panthers were able to settle in as Danielle Garven made a great move and finished off a layup and Kauai Bradley finished off a strong take to the hoop to make the score 10-6 in favor of the home team at the first media timeout. After the timeout, the Pitt defense continued to pressure the Wolfpack and forced three turnovers across the final three minutes as NC State took the 13-6 lead into the second quarter.
The Wolfpack opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to extend their lead out to 12, 20-8, before Kyla Nelson was able to end the run with a step-back three-pointer. The Panthers went cold from the field following the Nelson three as the Wolfpack used a 13-1 run to gain some breathing room as their lead was extended to 21, 33-12. Jasmine Whitney was able to carry the scoring load down the stretch of the quarter for the Panthers as she scored the final five points for Pitt, all from the free throw line, as the teams went to halftime with NC State leading 35-16.
It was a slow start to the third for both sides as the Panthers defense held the Wolfpack without a field goal for the first four minutes of the quarter. The home team was then able to score the first seven points of the quarter to take the 42-16 lead. Senior Cassidy Walsh netted five straight for the Panthers including a deep three to cut the lead down to 42-21 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The Wolfpack closed the quarter with the final five points to take the 47-21 lead into the final frame.
The two teams exchanged buckets early on in the fourth before the Panthers were able to knock down a pair of triples from Bradley and Nelson to cut the deficit down to 56-32 with just over four minutes left. Pitt, however, wasn't able to get any closer down the stretch of the fourth as the Wolfpack pulled away and earned the 63-34 home victory.
Bradley led the Panthers in scoring as she netted eight points, three rebounds and two steals across 27 minutes of work while Cara Judkins netted six points and five boards in the loss.
