Defensive Prowess Lifts No. 8 Pitt Volleyball to Another Sweep

No. 8 Panthers Top Miami, 3-0
PITTSBURGH – A strong defensive effort helped the No. 8 Pitt volleyball team earn its third consecutive sweep of an ACC opponent, winning 25-15, 25-8, 25-13 against Miami Friday night at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers improved to 14-0, marking their best start to a season in program history, and earned a 3-0 start to ACC play for the third consecutive year. The Hurricanes dropped to 6-4, 2-1 in the league.
Pitt's defensive prowess held Miami to a negative percentage in the attacking column at -.023, with 22 kills and 24 errors on 86 attempts. The Hurricanes had four players register negative percentages. Pitt had just eight errors of its own on the day, with 31 kills to hit .377.
Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Lund led Pitt with a hitting percentage of .471 with 10 kills and two errors on 17 attempts. Fellow outside Stephanie Williams followed with six kills and one error on 12 attempts to hit .417. Junior middle Layne Van Buskirk had five kills and was one of three Panthers to post four blocks, including Chinaza Ndee and Williams.
Senior setter Kamalani Akeo recorded 11 assists, and redshirt sophomore Kylee Levers had nine. Redshirt senior libero Angela Seman had a match-high 12 digs against the Hurricanes.

Set One: No. 8 Pitt 25, Miami 15
The Panthers took control early in the first set, using a 3-0 run that ended with a Seman ace to reach a 5-2 lead. A 5-0 run by the Panthers ahead, 12-5, and another 5-0 surge made it a 17-8 margin in Pitt's favor. The Hurricanes answered with a 4-0 run to cut their deficit to 17-12. Pitt earned set point, 24-14, following a 4-0 run, and finally claimed the first frame, 25-15.
Pitt hit .190 for the set and held Miami to a negative attacking percentage at -.031. Lund paced the Panthers with four kills, while Ndee contributed three blocks.
Set Two: No. 8 Pitt 25, Miami 8
Pitt cruised to a 9-0 lead to start the second set, capping the run with a Van Buskirk kill. The Panthers rolled to a largest lead of 24-7 following a 6-1 run, ending on a kill by Lund. Pitt downed the Hurricanes, 25-8.
The Panthers limited Miami to a .000 percentage in the attack column, with six kills and six errors on 29 attempts. Pitt's offense ignited with 11 kills and just one error on 20 attempts to hit a clean .500. Van Buskirk had four kills in the frame and Seman tallied six digs.
Set Three: No. 8 Pitt 25, Miami 13
The Panthers made quick work of Miami in the third set, starting off with a 4-0 run. Back-to-back blocks by Williams capped a 6-0 run and gave Pitt its first double-figure lead of the stanza, 13-3. A 4-0 run extended Pitt's lead to 19-7, but Miami fought back with a 3-0 run of its own. The Panthers ended the match outscoring Miami 6-3.
Pitt closed the match by hitting .450 in the third set, with 11 kills and two errors on 20 attempts.
