Perez and Pimentel Record Goals in Win
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Detroit Mercy Tuesday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
The victory improved Pitt's record to 3-3 (0-1 ACC) on the season, with all three losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents. The loss dropped the Titans to 1-6 (0-2 Horizon) on the year.
The Panthers came out of the gates aggressive, firing off 10 shots in the first half, but didn't end up finding the back of the net until the second half when two quick strikes from senior Javi Perez and sophomore Marcony Pimentel gave Pitt the eventual win.
"It was a difficult win that took a lot of patience," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "But, what I'm proud of is that it brings the team to .500, which is a good result at home before we hit the road again. So, we are very excited about the result."
Pitt controlled possession well in the first half, but was unable to convert on multiple opportunities. The Panthers closed out the first 45 minutes with a 10-0 advantage in shots over the Titans.
Heading into the second half, Pitt continued its up-tempo style. The Panther offense finally broke through in the 55th minute after a cross from freshman Alec Townsend found the foot of Perez for an easy score. Pitt went right back on the attack following its goal, with Pimentel giving the Panthers a 2-0 advantage just over a minute later after scoring from the middle of the box following a deflection by Detroit Mercy's keeper. The Panther defense would continue to hold the Titans in check following the two quick scores, giving Pitt the 2-0 victory.
The Panthers closed the match with advantages in shots (16-2), shots on goal (7-1) and corners (6-2).
Pimentel led the team with four shots to go along with his second half goal, while sophomore Edward Kizza recorded three shots and sophomore Jose Luis Sena Arbona added two. Perez, Townsend, senior Tom Moxham, junior Alex Peperak and freshmen Facundo Costantini, Nyk Sessock and Jackson Walti each contributed one shot apiece in the contest, with Perez adding a goal and Townsend tallying an assist.
In goal, freshman keeper Johan Penaranda earned his first career clean sheet, collecting one save during 90 minutes of shutout play.
Up next, the Panthers will head back out on the road for an ACC matchup with No. 6 Louisville Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at Lynn Stadium.
