PITTSBURGH – With the first round of the 2018 minor league postseason wrapped up, former University of Pittsburgh baseball players are inching closer to their goal of winning a league championship.
2016 first-round draft pick T.J. Zeuch has not lost his edge since entering the postseason for the Toronto Blue Jays AA affiliate New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Starting game one in the first round against the Trenton Thunder, Zeuch was unstoppable, going 6.0 scoreless innings for the Fisher Cats while striking out five to help New Hampshire get past the Thunder in a three-game sweep. Most recently, the righty was able to bring that success into the second round, leading the Fisher Cats to a Game One victory behind a 6.0 inning outing, allowing only one run and striking out four. The Fisher Cats would claim the Eastern League title on Sept. 15.
Zeuch consistently put up All-Star numbers throughout the year, racking up 15 quality starts in his 27 appearances during the regular season and getting two more during the postseason. In 21 regular season starts after joining New Hampshire from the Dunedin Blue Jays, Zeuch boasts a 3.08 ERA and 1.26 WHIP while opposing batters averaged just .258 on the righty.
Joe Harvey, a 2014 19th-round pick of the New York Yankees, has been setting career numbers during his time with the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders this season. In 38 regular season appearances with the RailRiders, Harvey boasts a 1.66 ERA and 0.99 WHIP while striking out 61 batters.
During the postseason, Harvey has yet to be scored on and has allowed only one hit in his three appearances for Sracnton/Wilkes-Barre. In the first round against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Harvey made two appearances, allowing just one hit in 2.0 innings and received the win in game one. Harvey has not skipped a beat in the transition to the second round against the Durham Bulls, coming in for 0.2 scoreless innings, striking out one and allowing no hits.
A 2018 sixth-round pick of the Houston Astros, R.J. Freure and the Tri-City ValleyCats have already finished their season, winning the last game of the year to capture the New York-Penn League Championship. Freure was an integral part of Tri-City this season, boasting an impressive 0.98 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in his 11 regular season appearances. In the postseason, Freure made one appearance, going 3.0 scoreless innings against the Hudson Valley Renegades, striking out four and allowing only one hit en route to the save.
The ValleyCats swept through the postseason, winning both of their series in two games against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Renegades.
