Pitt Sinks Five Penalty Kicks to Grab 2-1 Victory
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team opened up exhibition play Thursday evening with a 2-1 (PK) victory over Fairleigh Dickinson under the lights at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Pitt went a perfect 5-for-5 in postgame penalty kicks to walk away with the victory in the team's first of two scheduled exhibition contests.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead in the 21st minute as redshirt senior Ashley Moreira snagged the ball in the far corner and whipped it over the head of the Fairleigh Dickinson keeper to put Pitt up 1-0.
The Knights would respond in the 74th minute after a header goal found the back of the cage, and tied the contest at 1-1.
At the end of regulation, tied at 1-1, the Panthers and Knights headed into penalty kicks, as Pitt earned the decisive victory. All five Pitt strikers in Taylor Pryce, Madison Clayton, Moreira, Madeline Gravante and Anna Rico would score. Keeper Amaia Pena made a save for the Panthers during penalty kicks, as Pitt outscored the Knights 5-2 in the bonus shots.
The Panthers will wrap up the exhibition season Sunday afternoon, traveling to Columbus for a 2 p.m. meeting with national powerhouse Ohio State. The regular season gets underway Aug. 17 as Pitt kicks off a four-game homestand at 7 p.m. versus Ohio.
