#ProPanthers Update – The Dog Days of August
8/11/2018 11:49:00 AM | Baseball
PITTSBURGH – As the Major and Minor League season get deeper into the dog days of August, former University of Pittsburgh relief pitchers are showing no signs of fatigue as they reach the last part of the season.
2014 draftee Ray Black has been a consistent arm in the bullpen of the San Francisco Giants since being called up by the club. Since his MLB debut on July 8, Black has been spectacular for the Giants, going 10 straight games without giving up a hit to opposing batters until Aug. 7. Black was also able to pick up his first MLB win in a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 5.
The 2011 seventh-round selection of the Giants has been an expert at making batters whiff at the MLB level, striking out 15 in his 11.2 innings of work. His 0.77 WHIP is the lowest on the Giants' pitching staff and also owns the lowest opponent average on the staff with a .105.
Black started the 2018 season with the AA Richmond Flying Squirrels, where he appeared in 10 games, earning a 0.90 ERA and striking out 20 in that stretch. In his 10.0 innings of work with the Flying Squirrels, he allowed only four hits and four walks, garnering a 0.80 WHIP and converted on all four of his save opportunities. The former Panthers' pitcher was called up to the AAA Sacramento River Cats on May 10 and would appear in 22 games, garnering a 2.91 ERA and 0.78 WHIP while striking out 38 batters in 21.2 innings of work.
Since being drafted in the sixth round by the Houston Astros this year, RJ Freure has been unhittable to opposing batters. In his six appearances with the Short-A Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League, Freure boasts an impressive 0.60 ERA and WHIP in 15.0 innings while giving up only five hits and striking out 14.
Freure, who has been used in mainly long relief duties, averages just under 3.0 innings per outing for the ValleyCats. The righty has also not given up an earned run since his debut with Tri-City on July 7, throwing 13.0 consecutive innings of scoreless baseball.
