Pitt Pitcher Instant Contributor for Wareham Gatemen
PITTSBURGH –University of Pittsburgh rising redshirt junior Derek West has been unstoppable for the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod League during his first full season in the nation's top collegiate summer league.
West joins the Gatemen after being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 28th round this year, opting to return to Pitt rather than pursuing a professional contract. He joins the country's top collegiate prospects in Cape Cod after an impressive ACC Tournament, where he pitched 6.0 scoreless innings for the Panthers, bursting on the scene after missing his first two seasons due to injuries.
In his 10.0 innings of work over three appearances at the Cape, West has given up only one run while striking out nine. He is only one of two pitcher on Wareham to have pitched at least 10.0 innings and have an ERA under 1.00.
"I am thrilled with how the summer season has been going so far," West said. "I am even more excited about the opportunity to be able to work on the areas of my game that needed improved. I'm using this summer to really develop into a complete pitcher and to seeing the results pay off is awesome. I look forward to using these last couple of weeks up here to improve even more in areas that need improved, maintain my strengths and take new knowledge back to Pitt with me. I can't wait to get on the field with Coach Bell and Coach Oakes this fall to prepare for the season."
West had a strong start to the summer for Wareham, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings, giving up just three hits in his July 14 performance. He then shut down the first place Hyannis Harbor Hawks for 1.0 innings, striking out one without surrendering a hit. In his first start of the summer, West went 4.0 innings against the Harwich Mariners, giving up only one run on three hits and striking out five.
With only nine games remaining, the Gatemen are currently second in the West Division, sitting just one point behind first place Hyannis with a record of 20-14-1.
West is not alone in his success in the Cape as he joins a fellow junior pitcher in the wood bad league. Dan Hammer, who has had a spectacular summer so far with the Chatham Anglers, has a 1.22 ERA through 22.0 innings and was voted to the Cape Cod League All-Star Game as the East Division's starting pitcher.
