Pitt Wins Second Consecutive ACC Series
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped the series finale at Boston College Sunday afternoon, falling to the Eagles 8-0, but taking the series, 2-1 for its second straight ACC series victory.
Pitt (17-11, 6-9 ACC) won the opening two games, sweeping a doubleheader Saturday with a 9-4 victory in the opener and a 6-4, 13-inning win in game two. The Panthers fell in the finale as Boston College held Pitt's offense off the board.
The Eagles would jump out to the early lead, plating a pair in the third and four in the fourth. The home team would add single runs in the seventh and eighth to secure the victory.
Blair Calvo (1-2) earns the loss, as he allowed two runs off four hits and one walk, fanning three. Dan Hammer, TJ Pagan and Peyton Reesman all saw time out of the bullpen with Pagan putting together an impressive 2.1 innings of work, allowing one run off just two hits and two walks, whiffing one.
Ron Washington Jr. recorded Pitt's lone hit of the game, tallying a single in the seventh that put runners on the corners with two outs after a Frank Maldonado walk, chasing Boston College's starting pitcher.
The series win is Pitt's second straight ACC series victory as the Panthers took two from national powerhouse Virginia last weekend. It is the first time Pitt has rattled off back-to-back ACC series victories since sweeping Virginia Tech at home on March 24-25, 2017 and moving on to earn a 2-1 series win over Duke on the road the following weekend.
The Panthers will return to action Tuesday, taking on Kent State at home at 6 p.m. and will travel to rival West Virginia the following day, visiting the Mountaineers at 6 p.m. Pitt resumes ACC play against Georgia Tech at Charles L. Cost Field, hosting the Yellow Jackets for a three-game swing beginning April 13 at 6 p.m.
