Panthers Take Doubleheader from the Herd.
PITTSBURGH – In non-conference action, the University of Pittsburgh softball team swept Marshall in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Vartabedian Field in Pittsburgh.
The Panthers (28-16-0) earned its first victory of the evening in walkoff fashion after a back-and-forth affair that saw the game tied three different times as junior Taylor Myers hit a sac fly in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded to push Pitt past the Herd (23-27-1) 6-5. In the contest, senior Kayla Harris earned the win after relieving starting pitcher Sarah Dawson in the top of the seventh. Dawson tossed all but one inning, giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits. The junior struck out four. Harris completed the final inning facing just four batters, giving up just one hit and striking out one.
Harris returned to the circle in game two, leading the Panthers to an 8-0 win in six innings. The senior went the distance, earning her sixth shutout of the season allowing just three hits, while striking out four. Pitt produced six hits in the game from six different players, including home runs from seniors Giorgiana Zeremenko and McKayla Taylor. Zeremenko's homer marked her 15th of the season, while Taylor's three-run shot in the sixth gave the Panthers the run-rule victory.
Game One Scoring Summary: Pitt 6, Marshall 5
Marshall got on the board in the opening inning of play thanks to an error by the Panthers. With runners on second and third following a leadoff double, walk and groundout, Zeremenko attempted to pick off the runner at third, but was unsuccessful as her throw sailed wide into the outfield.
Pitt took the lead in the bottom half of the frame as the Panthers answered with three runs. The inning began with a single from Taylor and back-to-back free passes for Zeremenko and junior Olivia Gray to load the bases. Following consecutive strikeouts, sophomore Kaitlyn Kruger produced two-out lighting with a rip to left center, scoring both Taylor and Zeremenko to give Pitt a 3-1 advantage.
A three-run shot by the Herd's Briana Daiss in the top of the third put Marshall back out in front 4-3. The junior brought in Elicia D'Orazio and Taylor McCord, who both singled in the inning.
A clutch, pinch-hit RBI-double by freshman Morgan Batesole in the bottom of the fourth tied the game once again. Myers reached base on a leadoff single up the middle and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by Kruger. Batesole, who was brought in to hit for junior Gabrielle Fredericks, came up big with a double to right center to push across the run.
The Panthers found an advantage in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. With runners on first and second after Zeremenko singled and freshman Hunter Levesque walked, junior Alexis Solak ripped a ball to the left center gap, bringing around pinch runner Marissa DeMatteo.
Following a bizarre situation in which Pitt head coach Holly Aprile forgot to reenter a player in the lineup, allowing an initially out Herd batter to step to the plate again, Marshall knotted the score marking the third tie of the game, 5-5. Wylie Glover, who was originally out but got to bat again due to reentry mishap, singled in her second chance and scored on a hit to left by Katie Adams.
The Panthers walked off in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded sac fly by Myers. Zeremenko walked to begin the inning and reached second safely on a fielder's choice by Gray as the Herd's shortstop committed a fielding error. Levesque hit a slow roller towards third to advance all runners and juice the bases. Marshall was able to get the lead runner at home once before Myers sealed the deal with a long fly ball to center, allowing Gray to tag up and score.
Game Two Scoring Summary: Pitt 8, Marshall 0 (Six Innings)
Pitt saw the board first in game two of the doubleheader, scoring two runs off an error by Marshall in the opening inning. The Panthers loaded the bases as Zeremenko and Levesque both walked and Solak was hit with a pitch. In the next at-bat, Myers popped a ball straight into the air over the circle, which was dropped by the Herd's third baseman allowing Pitt to take a 2-0 lead.
With her 15th home run of the season, Zeremenko put the Panthers out in front 4-0. The senior sent a ball over the left field wall in the bottom of the second, scoring Hershman who singled in the frame.
Pitt extended its lead to 5-0 after an error on the first baseman during a relay to home. With Levesque on second after singling and advancing on a sac bunt, the freshman touched home after a single to right center by Myers. Levesque moved up to third on the hit and came home as Marshall's first baseman lost the ball on the relay.
The Panthers solidified the win the bottom of the sixth as Taylor's three-run shot ended the game.
