West Puts Together Solid Start in Loss to Golden Flashes
KENT, Ohio – Despite a solid start from Derek West, the University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped a 2-0 decision to Kent State in the second of a home-and-home series at Schoonover Stadium in Kent, Ohio Wednesday afternoon.
West threw 5.2 innings of work, allowing one run off four hits and one walk, striking out five batters. It was his second start of the season against the Golden Flashes as he struck out 12 in 12.0 combined innings of work.
"I think we are all frustrated with our offensive execution today," said head coach Joe Jordano. "We had opportunities to score, but could not get that timely hit. Kent State got a big two-out hit in the sixth and that was the game winner. Derek [West] gave us another solid start, which is great, and we played clean defensively. We must be more consistent in our approach and connect some at bats together. That was the difference today."
It was a pitchers' duel from the start, as both West and Kent State starter Robert Zeigler kept things scoreless through five innings. West would retire 15 of the 20 batters he faced in the first five frames, before putting a man on in the 6th after an infield single. After a stolen base and ground out put the Kent State baserunner on 3rd, reliever Chris Cappas would surrender a single up the middle that allowed the Golden Flashes to take a 1-0 lead.
Pitt had its best offensive threat in the eighth, loading the bases. Cole MacLaren was struck by a pitch and David Yanni would draw a two-out walk, before a single through the left side by Frank Maldonado would put three on with two outs, but the Panthers left them full.
Kent State would extend its lead to 2-0 after a solo homer in the eighth, an advantage it would not surrender, as the Golden Flashes captured both wins in the season series between the two programs.
West (1-4) earned the loss, despite a good performance, as Cappas, RJ Freure and Yaya Chentouf all saw work out of the pen. Offensively, the Kent State staff held Pitt to just three hits, tallied by Maldonado (2) and Yanni.
The Panthers return to action this weekend for a crucial three-game series at ACC Coastal Division and national powerhouse Miami. Pitt gets things started Friday at 7 p.m. with game two set for Saturday at 7 p.m. and the finale Sunday at 1 p.m. at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables, Fla.
