Pitt Drops Road Decision to Mountaineers
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell short to rival West Virginia Wednesday night at Monongalia Park in Morgantown, W.Va., dropping a 12-1 decision to the Mountaineers in the first of two Backyard Brawls.
"Give all the credit to WVU tonight, they did it all," said head coach Joe Jordano. "They pitched well and did a tremendous job at the plate. They beat us, bottom line. Ronnie [Washington] swung the bat very well. He has made steady progress and gets better every day. We have to move on quickly to this weekend against Georgia Tech."
The Mountaineers found the scoresheet first in the opening inning as Braden Zarbinsky snatched the first run of the game, scoring off a triple by Brandon White. Darius Hill hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring White increasing the home team's lead to 2-0 through one.
West Virginia would continue to add on to its lead with a run in the third, making it 3-0 in the Mountaineers' favor. West Virginia would tack on three more runs in the fifth, increasing its lead to 6-0.
The Panthers got on the board with a solo home run off the bat of Liam Sabino, as he smacked the first pitch he saw over the wall in left field in the sixth inning, cutting West Virginia's lead to five. West Virginia would respond, however, scoring three in the sixth and three in the eighth to amass a 12-1 advantage.
Redshirt sophomore Kevin Henriksen (0-2) made his first collegiate start, earning the loss, allowing four hits and three runs in 3.0 innings of work, walking one and fanning a pair. Chris Gomez threw 1.0 inning, letting up four hits and three runs, striking out one. RJ Freure took over in the fifth, striking out two and giving up three runs in 2.0 innings, fanning three. William Kirwan and Peyton Reesman also saw action out of the pen for the Panthers.
Pitt returns to action this weekend, hosting Georgia Tech in a three-game ACC series at Charles L. Cost Field. Action will get underway Friday at 6 p.m. as the Panthers host Social Media Night. Saturday's game is set for 3 p.m. with Sunday to conclude the series at 1 p.m.
