Pidich Throws Another Gem as Pitt Moves to 7-2
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Redshirt senior Matt Pidich tossed another outstanding game as the University of Pittsburgh baseball team grabbed a 3-0 win over previously undefeated Butler Saturday afternoon at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee, Fla.
Pidich was nearly flawless as the Panthers (7-2) blanked the Bulldogs (9-1), allowing just two hits and one walk in 6.0 innings. For the third consecutive week, he recorded a new career high in strikeouts as he fanned nine Bulldog batters. The redshirt senior moves to 2-0 on the season, dropping his ERA to a minuscule 1.02.
"We played Pitt baseball again today," said head coach Joe Jordano. "It was a very well-pitched game by both teams. Pidich was very good and really controlled the pace of the game. We played a little small ball and got ahead early in the first and as it played out, that was all we needed. Nick [Banman] swung the bat really well today and gave us an insurance run in the eighth.
"I was also impressed with Chase [Smith] today, earning his first save as a Panther. Defensively, we turned some big double plays and David [Yanni] turned a really sweet 6-3 double play to end the game. Our goal is to get better each game and continue to improve our team play. We look forward to another opportunity tonight."
Freshman Chase Smith earned his first save as a Panther in a three-inning performance. He continued to blank his opponent, allowing just one hit and one walks, striking out two. He has yet to allow an earned run in five appearances, boasting a .086 opponent average.
Pitt struck early, grabbing a 2-0 advantage in the first. Connor Perry led things off with a single into right center, moving into scoring position on an Alex Amos sacrifice bunt. A single by Liam Sabino would put men on the corners with just one out as Perry was able to score on a wild pitch, putting Sabino on second. A sacrifice bunt by Frank Maldonado plated Sabino as Pitt took an advantage it would not surrender.
Nick Banman added an insurance run in the eighth as he rocketed a solo homer over the right field wall, despite a windy afternoon in Kissimmee, as Pitt held on for a 3-0 victory.
With the win, Pitt moves to 7-2 on the season, winners of three straight. The Panthers tallied eight hits on the day, as six different Panthers recorded one or more, led by two from both Banman and Sabino.
Pitt will return to action tonight, taking on Massachusetts at 6:30 p.m. Blair Calvo is expected to get the start for the Panthers on the mound.
