Panthers Earn Top Program Mark on Bars for the Second Time in 2018
TOWSON, Md. – Freshman Haley Brechwald of the University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team was named East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Year at the 2018 EAGL Championship Saturday, March 24, hosted by Towson University at SECU Arena.
"I'm very proud of Haley [Brechwald] for the much deserved honor of Rookie of the Year," said head coach Samantha Snider. "She's been very steady for us, a major contributor every week and a leader in the gym and off the floor. I'm happy that the rest of the conference recognized her achievements because they are much deserved."
Brechwald was tabbed EAGL Rookie of the Year after a standout debut season with the Panthers. The freshman earned an EAGL-record six Rookie of the Week awards and collected 12 individual titles in 11 meets. Brechwald now owns three of the top 10 all-around scores in program history after recording her second 39.325 this season at the EAGL Championship, which is tied for eighth in the record books. She also owns the fourth-best score with a 39.375.
The team recorded a 195.475 at the conference meet, with a top event score of 49.275 on bars. The mark ties Pitt's best in program history, as the Panthers broke the record earlier this season with the same score. The floor squad also broke into the top 10 in the record book, tallying a season-high 49.275, which ties for ninth all-time. Pitt rounded out the Championship with a 48.950 on vault and a 47.975 on beam.
"Our team showed a lot of fight tonight," said Snider. "We came back and finished our last three events strong, even though we had some uncharacteristic mistakes. This was great experience for us heading into regionals. There are a lot of things that we can learn and take away from this meet and look to improve upon."
The Panthers saw two gymnasts reach the podium in Brechwald and junior Lucy Brett. In addition to taking home Rookie of the Year honors, Brechwald tallied a season-high 9.925 on floor to place second overall, while finishing third in the all-around with a 39.325. Brett also posted a career-high 9.925 en route to a second-place finish on bars and a spot in the record book as she tied for the second-highest bars score in program history.
"We had some great highlights from the meet, including Lucy Brett on bars," said Snider. "She has been so solid on that event all year for us. It was great to see all of that come together for her tonight and to be rewarded for it."
