Panthers Play Homage to Blue Collar Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is synonymous with a working class, blue collar type of attitude. Individuals who put their best into each and every facet of their chosen profession on a day-to-day basis. That work ethic and grind is no different for the University of Pittsburgh baseball team.
The Panthers are attempting to establish themselves amongst the nation's premier teams, competing in the top NCAA Division I baseball conference in the country. Squaring off against a majority of programs in more baseball-friendly climates, the Panthers face an uphill battle, but, like their Pittsburgh comrades, embrace the challenge with a hard-working, determined attitude.
So with the prominence of the turnover chain and trash can, why not celebrate one of the more exciting moments one can experience on the baseball diamond – the home run. The Panthers plan on doing just that this season, and have already seen some early-season success.
Catch Pitt at home or on the road, see a ball sail through the foul poles and over the fence, and you might see that Panther cross home plate and don a different helmet than the traditional cap. Instead of the blue or black, gold brimmed style batting helmet the Panthers typically wear, you'd see a gold construction helmet, adorned with the 3-D script P logo and a smattering of numbers of those who have lined one over the wall before.

Introducing the home run helmet.
"A lot of the teams that we play have a long standing home run tradition that the team and the fan base seem to love," said redshirt senior Caleb Parry, who can be credited as the mastermind behind the home run helmet. "I thought that we needed something similar that related to the blue collar background of the city of Pittsburgh. We are all hard working, hard-nosed players and the helmet represents our fervent work to achieve success at this level."
The Panthers have used the home run helmet nine times so far this season, on pace for 33 dingers, three more than the 2017 season total. Liam Sabino has seen his number stuck to the helmet a team-best six times, while David Yanni sits at two and Nick Banman one.
WHO
Redshirt senior Caleb Parry instituted the home run helmet for the Panthers.
WHAT
A Vegas gold construction helmet, donned with the 3-D script P, and the numbers of those who have hit homers throughout the season.
WHEN
Specific to the 2018 season.
WHERE
On the road or at home, the home run helmet is everywhere.
WHY
To commemorate those who hit long balls.
HOW
It's simple – hit a home run, wear the helmet.
