Pitt Posts Fourth Highest Bars Score in Program History at Tri-Meet

Panthers Earn a 49.175 on Bars in Meet against No. 18 George Washington and West Virginia.
WASHINGTON – The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team posted the fourth highest bars score in program history en route to a third place finish in its road tri-meet against No. 18 George Washington and West Virginia Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
The Panthers earned an overall team score of 195.500 in the meet, led by their 49.175 on bars. Pitt also earned a 49.025 on vault, a 49.000 on floor and a 48.300 on beam.
The 2018 Pitt squad now owns three of the top four bars scores in program history. The Panthers posted the top score in program history in a dual meet against New Hampshire, earning a 49.275. They also recorded a 49.250 in a quad meet against Texas Woman's University, Auburn and NC State before posting their 49.175 in today's meet.
Individually, four Panthers recorded top-five event finishes in the meet. Seniors Catie Conrad and Taylor Laymon both finished second on bars, with each earning a 9.875. Freshman Haley Brechwald placed second on beam with a 9.875 and fourth on floor with the same score. Sophomore Alecia Petrikis rounded out the group with a 9.875 on vault to place third in the event.
BARS
The Panthers started the day on bars, where they posted the fourth highest score in program history. Conrad and Laymon led the team, with each scoring a 9.875. The mark tied a season-high for Conrad and set a new season-high for Laymon. Following the duo was sophomore Lucy Jones with a career-high tying 9.850. Following that was junior Lucy Brett with a 9.800 and sophomore Megan Tripp with a 9.775.
George Washington led the pack after the first rotation, earning a 49.200. Pitt trailed closely behind with a 49.175, followed by West Virginia at 49.125.
BEAM
Pitt moved to beam in the second rotation, where Brechwald led the squad with a season-high tying 9.875. Following Brechwald was Conrad, who earned a 9.800 in the event.
After the second rotation, the Colonials remained in first place with a 98.225. The Mountaineers jumped into second place, earning a 98.200 through two events, followed by the Panthers with a 97.475.
FLOOR
Next up for the Panthers was floor, where Brechwald again led the team with her second-consecutive 9.875 of the day. Following Brechwald was freshman Jordan Ceccarini with a season-high tying 9.825. Petrikis posted a 9.800 in the event, followed by Conrad and junior Charli Spivey, both at 9.750.
The standings remained the same heading into the final rotation. George Washington led the way with a 147.500, followed by West Virginia at 147.275 and Pitt with a 146.475.
VAULT
Pitt closed the meet on vault, where Petrikis led the squad with a career-high 9.875. Brechwald and sophomore Deven Herbine both posted a 9.825 in the event, with the mark tying a career-high for Herbine. Following the duo was junior Kensleigh Owens with a 9.775 and freshman Sophie Bochenek with a 9.725.
The Colonials closed the meet with a top score of 196.875, followed by the Moutaineers at 196.425 and the Panthers with a 195.500.
UP NEXT
Pitt will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face EAGL foe North Carolina in its last regular season matchup Saturday, March 17 at Carmichael Arena.
