
Panthers Grab First ACC Road Win, 58-42, at Clemson

Diop Paces Pitt with 15 Points
CLEMSON, S.C. – Redshirt junior forward Yacine Diop had a game-high 15 points to lead Pitt women's basketball (10-13, 2-8 ACC) to its first ACC road win since February 2016, 58-46, over Clemson (11-12, 1-9 ACC) Thursday at Littlejohn Coliseum.
The victory ended a 13-game losing streak in ACC road games for the Panthers, dating back to a Feb. 18, 2016 win at North Carolina (76-70). It also ended a four-game overall losing streak and a four-game losing streak in true road games for Pitt.
Sophomore point guard Jasmine Whitney had 14 points for her sixth double-figure scoring outing of the year. Junior center Kalista Walters was one point and one rebound away from a double-double, posting nine for both statistic.
Diop posted the first four points of the game for Pitt. The Panthers held on to the lead for the remainder of the quarter, leading by as many as eight on two separate occasions – the latest being with 46 seconds remaining in the period (18-10). Clemson's Thornton hit a free throw to make it a seven-point game at the first intermission, 18-11.
After the Tigers' Ivy Atkism made a free throw to open the second quarter (18-12, 8:43), the Panthers used a 6-0 run to reach their first double-figure lead of the game (24-12) with 6:30 left before break. Pitt held on to its double-digit lead until Clemson's Destiny Thomas made a three at the halftime buzzer to make it 28-19. Whitney led all scorers with 10 points in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
Clemson used a 9-0 run over the first two minutes and 16 seconds of the third quarter to tie the game at 28. The Panthers answered by outscoring the Tigers 15-5 over the remainder of the period, including six points from Walters and six from Diop. Pitt took a 43-33 lead into the final period.
The Panthers kept Clemson at bay by opening the fourth quarter outscoring the Tigers 8-2 to reach their largest lead of the contest (51-35) with 5:46 left to play. Pitt tied its largest margin at two more instances in the fourth quarter, including the final tally of 58-42.
