PITTSBURGH – Trailing by as many as 13 in the second half, the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (7-5, 0-0 ACC) was able to finish off their biggest come-from-behind victory of the season on Tuesday night as they took down the UNCW Seahawks, 60-56. Sophomore Cara Judkins had a strong game down low for the Panthers as she netted a career-high 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in the win.
"I'm really pleased with how our kids fought and clawed and made plays in order for us to win a basketball game tonight," stated head coach Lance White. "We talked a lot to them about developing a fourth-quarter mentality and that's what we did today. A couple of months ago, we would've quit on that game and said, 'We're done,' but this group is finding a way to overcome their own fears and overcome the past and say, "We're going to be different."
Judkins led the way for the Panthers with 16 points on 8-for-11 from the floor while senior Cassidy Walsh netted 15 points, a career-high eight rebounds and five assists in the win. Kyla Nelson came off the bench on Tuesday and netted 11 points across 25 minutes while Jasmine Whitney and Danielle Garven each netted seven points in the win.
With just seven minutes left and trailing by eight, the outcome for the Panthers didn't look good but they were able to fight and claw and found a way back into the game. The Panthers used a quick 8-0 spurt to tie the game, 51-51, over the next five minutes and forced a timeout by the Seahawks. A layup by UNCW gave them the 53-51 lead with 1:38 left but Nelson responded with a huge layup and free throw to regain the lead for the Panthers, 54-53, with 1:21 left. The visitors didn't go away as they hit two free throws to take the one point lead but Walsh drained a jumper and the Panthers defense locked down the Seahawks to claim the come-from-behind home victory.
After some back-and-forth play to open things up in the first quarter, the Panthers were able to get out to the 10-7 advantage at the first media timeout as Cassidy Walsh and Kyla Nelson drilled triples. After the Seahawks drilled a three to cut the Pitt lead to two, 12-10, Danielle Garven and Cara Judkins scored back-to-back buckets to give the Panthers the 16-12 lead through 10 minutes.
The Seahawks were able to control the tempo of the game in the second quarter as they took the 20-19 lead midway through the second. After a pair of Judkins layups cut the Pitt deficit to two, 25-23, UNCW was able to net the final bucket of the quarter, a three-pointer, to take the 28-23 lead into the locker room.
The Seahawks came out of the locker room strong in the third quarter as they scored the first seven points of the quarter before extending their lead to a game-high 13 points, 39-26, with six minutes left in the quarter. Walsh was then able to take over the game over the next three minutes as she netted eight straight for the Panther to cut the UNCW lead to six, 43-37. Pitt then ended the quarter on a high not as Kyla Nelson drilled a triple at the buzzer of the third quarter to cut the Panthers deficit to four, 45-41, heading into the final frame.
The Panthers played their best basketball across the final 10 minutes as they were able to outscore the Seahawks 19-11 as they claimed the victory. Pitt went 7-for-13 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe to seal the comeback victory.
For the game, Pitt dominated the boards as they outrebounded the Seahawks 37-26 for the game while also grabbing 13 offensive rebounds and turning those chances into 12 points. The Panthers held the big edge at the free throw line as they went 16-for-21 from the charity stripe while the Seahawks went just 5-for-7.
The Panthers will return to the Petersen Events Center on Friday night as they welcome Saint Francis (PA) for a non-conference showdown at 7:00 pm.
