Pitt Falls 57-42 to Wisconsin
NASHVILLE – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team dropped a 57-42 decision to Wisconsin Friday night at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in the opening night of the Challenge in Music City round-robin tournament.
With the loss, the Panthers slide to 2-4 on the year, while the Badgers improve to 5-0.
"I thought we fought hard and battled for three quarters tonight," said head coach Lance White. "As the pressure increases, we have to find and develop a tougher mentality. We are still struggling to understand the importance of rebounding and how it changes the game. We will get there."
Senior Danielle Garven led Pitt in scoring, matching a season-best 15 points. The forward was aggressive in the paint, making five trips to the charity strip where she finished 7-of-10.
Wisconsin's Imani Lewis finished with a game-high 18 points, while Marsha Howard pulled down 14 rebounds.
Pitt outscored the Badgers in two of the four quarters, leading after the first, 12-10, and outscoring the opposition 13-12 in the third quarter. However, it wouldn't be enough as Wisconsin outscored the Panthers 23-8 in the fourth en route to the victory.
The score was tied on 10 different occasions and featured nine lead changes.
The Panthers played a strong first half, leading the way after the first quarter, thanks to a six-point effort by Garven. Pitt fell behind early on in the second, but fought its way back from a five-point deficit to trail by one entering halftime, 22-21.
Similar to the first, the Panthers began the third quarter strong as they reached their largest lead of the game at the 2:43 mark. Pitt went on a 7-1 run to take the lead 34-27, but the Badgers bounced back to tie it 34-34 to end the third quarter.
Wisconsin broke the game open in the fourth, holding the Panthers to zero field goals over the final 5:59.
Pitt resumes action at the Challenge in Music City Friday, Nov. 24 when it faces Arkansas at 8:30 p.m. ET.
