Former Panther Hurler Joins MLB Powerhouse’s 40-Man Roster
NEW YORK – Former University of Pittsburgh pitcher Joe Harvey's Major League Baseball contract has been selected by the New York Yankees, as the former Panther joins the MLB powerhouse's 40-man roster.
Harvey, a 19th round selection of the Yankees in 2014, quickly made his way through the minor league system, boasting impressive numbers throughout his career. Harvey began the 2018 season with the AA Trenton Thunder, appearing in 5.0 innings in five games before being called up to the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on May 6.
With the RailRiders in the 2018 season, Harvey appeared in 54.1 innings in 38 games, boasting a 1.66 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 61 strikeouts and just 33 hits surrendered. The righty also accumulated eight saves during his tenure with the RailRiders.
He closed out the year with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as the lights out closer, allowing just three earned runs in his final 18 appearances.
Harvey was a reliable member of the Panthers staff from 2012-14 after earning a redshirt as a true freshman in 2011. In his draft season in 2014, he made 12 starts, posting a 2.90 ERA in 71.1 innings. He led the Panthers with 56 strikeouts, competing to a 2-2 record. He led the Panthers to a dominant win over then 23rd-ranked Georgia Tech, going 8.0 shutout innings, letting up just three hits in a defining start. He also made an impressive start against top-ranked Virginia, letting up only two hits in a shutout seven-inning performance.
