Panthers Drop Finale to Fighting Irish on Senior Night
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team dropped its final match of the regular season to No. 23 Notre Dame, 1-0, Saturday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The loss drops Pitt to 7-10-0 [2-6-0 ACC] on the season, with seven of its losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents. The win improves the Fighting Irish to 9-5-2 [4-3-1 ACC] on the year.
The two teams played each other very evenly through much of the match, with Notre Dame closing the game with only a slight 10-8 edge in shots. It wasn't until the 85th minute that the Fighting Irish got on the board, scoring from the middle of the box out of a free kick.
"I thought we came out on the front foot and went at them," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "We held the ball, controlled the second ball against [Notre Dame] and moved them quite well in the first half. We created three clear opportunities that we didn't capitalize on, and that's the game. In the second half, we got stretched a bit and opened up. I still think, at that time, we still created some tremendous chances and moved the ball, but you could clearly see that Notre Dame was getting more of the ball and made us suffer a little bit that way. We made a mistake on a restart once again and it cost us, and unfortunately that is the result you end up with, a loss."
The first 45 minutes of action saw a back-and-forth from both sides, with neither team gaining control of the match. Nearing the break, redshirt senior Robby Dambrot looked to have a quality opportunity after receiving a feed from sophomore Alexander Dexter, but the shot went just right of the post. With the first half in the books, Pitt held a slight 5-4 advantage in shots.
Heading into the second half, both teams remained in a stalemate through much of the match. It wasn't until the 85th minute that Notre Dame notched the first goal of the game, using a free kick to send the ball into the middle of the box, where they would eventually find the back of the net.
Dambrot led Pitt with three shots in the match. Dexter, senior Javi Perez, sophomores Edward Kizza and Marcony Pimentel and freshman Jackson Walti all added one shot apiece.
In goal, freshman keeper Johan Penaranda collected three saves while allowing one goal in 90 minutes of action.
Up next, the Panthers will head to Charlottesville, Va., to face the Cavaliers in the first round of the ACC Tournament Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
