Panthers Earn First-Ever ACC Tournament Victory
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team earned it's first-ever ACC Tournament victory following a 2-0 win over No. 7 Virginia Wednesday night at Klockner Stadium.
The win improves Pitt to 8-10-0 [2-6-0 ACC] on the season, with seven of its losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents. The loss drops the Cavaliers to 9-3-3 [3-2-2 ACC] on the year.
With the Panthers entering the ACC Championship for just the third time since joining the conference in 2013, Pitt was able to capture its first ACC Tournament win in program history. The teams' last conference tournament win came in 1995 when they beat Rutgers, 3-1, in the Big East Tournament.
Both squads were at a stalemate through much of the match. It wasn't until the 62nd minute that sophomore Edward Kizza broke the game open after scoring from the right side of the box following a feed from freshman Chandler Vaughn. Kizza then extended Pitt's lead in the 79th minute, adding his second goal of the match and 15th of the season.
"It was a fantastic performance by the guys," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "I'm very proud of the effort they gave. They fought when they had to, they defended when they had to and they played whenever they could. Kizza came up big with two goals and our bench came up big with supporting the play. Overall, it was a fantastic result and a big step for Pitt soccer to come in to a storied program like Virginia and to get a result in tournament play. Obviously the first time in tournament play for the program - first time in the ACC – so a fantastic step in our progress."
The first half of action saw very even play from both sides, with neither team registering a goal through 45 minutes. Virginia ended the half with a slight 5-2 lead in shots and 2-0 advantage in corners.
The Panther offense turned it on in the second half of play, with Kizza giving Pitt a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute off an assist from Vaughn. In the 79th minute, sophomore Alexander Dexter would find Kizza for his second goal of the match, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish.
Dexter and Kizza led the team with three shots each, followed by Vaughn and sophomore Marcony Pimentel with one shot apiece.
In goal, freshman keeper Johan Penaranda recorded his third clean sheet of the season, collecting two saves while allowing no goals through 90 minutes of action.
Up next, the Panthers will head to Durham, N.C. to face No. 8 Duke in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
