Young Pitchers Impress on the Mound
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team took down the Youngstown State Penguins 7-3 at Charles. L Cost Field Friday evening. The game closed out the home portion of the fall season for the Panthers.
"Timely hitting came with a big five-spot early in the game," said head coach Mike Bell. "I thought Coach Megahee has continued to work with the offense, putting the approach in there. What you saw were a couple two-strike adjustments. But what you've seen is the way that we can build innings in different ways. We can play the small ball a little bit, we can be patient at the plate. I know we put some guys in motion today as well, and it was another great team effort. We'll see what the guys are taking and how we're moving forward with that."
Pitt plated runs early, grabbing a 5-0 lead in the second inning. After back-to-back doubles by Kris Soto and Bryce O'Farrell plated three runs for Pitt, a single by Chris Cappas followed by a sac fly by Kyle Hess would score two more and give the home team the early advantage.
Pitt would extend its lead in the fourth as O'Farrell recorded his second RBI and double of the game, followed by a single from Nico Popa, to push the Panthers to lead 7-0.
The visitors would grab two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth.
The game included nine pitchers for the Panthers, with freshman Billy Corcoran getting the start on the mound. The rookie would allow one hit but retire the side unscathed. Junior transfer Christian Camacho used 17 pitches to down the Penguins in the second inning, while junior Chris Gomez followed with a 14-pitch outing.
Junior ace Dan Hammer struck out one to retire the side on 15 pitches in the fourth. Derek West would enter to pitch the fifth, while freshmen Mason Ronan and Brady Devereux tossed back-to-back clean frames.
David Moore and Chase Smith would close the game out for the Panthers as the pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts in the outing.
The Panthers will conclude their fall season at West Virginia Friday, Oct. 26. The Panthers and the Mountaineers will partake in the #FallBrawl and are set for a 6 p.m. start from Morgantown, W.Va.
