Diop Tallies 23 Points as Panthers Fall to Hokies
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team dropped a road contest Thursday evening, falling to Virginia Tech 89-66 at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.
Three Panthers would finish the night in double figures, as Pitt shot 40.7 percent from the floor, 38.0 percent from three and 77.0 percent from the free throw line. Yacine Diop would lead all scorers, finishing with 23 points, adding six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal. Both Kalista Walters and Jasmine Whitney would finish the game with 12 points apiece.
Pitt (8-9, 0-4 ACC) kept things close early in the opening quarter, as Diop recorded six of Pitt's first 10 points into the first media timeout. Following the official timeout, a three by Kyla Nelson that would cut the Virginia Tech (13-4, 2-2 ACC) advantage to two. The Hokies would then take over, quickly jumping out to a double-digit lead they wouldn't surrender.
The Virginia Tech offense was nearly flawless in the opening half, shooting 64.5 percent (20-of-31) from the floor and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from three-point range to take a 22-point lead into the break.
Pitt would go on a 12-6 run to open the second half, cutting the Virginia Tech lead to 16 with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter. That would be as close as the Panthers would get in the third frame, as with 30 minutes in the books, the Hokies would enjoy a 20-point advantage. The Panthers outscored the Hokies in the quarter, 16-14. Diop tallied 18 points through the opening three quarters, as Walters also recorded a double-digit scoring effort, posting 10 points.
The scoring cooled off in the final quarter as the Panther defense was able to hold the Hokies to just 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from the floor. Pitt would shoot 46.2 percent (6-of-13) and pull within as close as 16 of the lead, but couldn't erase the deficit.
