Sophomore Guard Hits Seven 3-Pointers, Posts Career-High 29 Points
PITTSBURGH – Sophomore guard Alayna Gribble tied a school record with seven 3-pointers as Pitt women's basketball (9-9, 1-4) earned its first ACC win of the season, 68-62, over (RV) Georgia Tech (12-7, 1-5 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Petersen Events Center.
Gribble shot 9-of-12 from the field, with 7-of-10 coming from long range for a career-high 29 points. The Pittsburgh native became the second Panther in program history to make a school-record seven 3-pointers in two or more games for her career. She tied the record as a freshman last season with seven triples at Syracuse (Feb. 2, 2017).
The only other Panther to tie the record twice was Haley Harguth against Rutgers and Boston College in January 2002.
Gribble and Harguth are two of five Panthers to make a school-record seven threes in a single game, including Abby Dowd (Jan. 14, 2012 – at DePaul), Erin Maloy (Feb. 1, 1992 – vs. Providence) and Lorri Johnson (Feb. 7, 1990 – vs. Seton Hall).
Redshirt junior Yacine Diop contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double performance of the season and the 12th of her career.
After a 0-of-4 start from the field for Pitt and a 6-0 run from Georgia Tech, the Panthers clawed back within one point (8-7) following Gribble's first 3-pointer of the game. At the first break, Pitt trailed by four, down 18-14. Diop had six points in the first quarter.
The Panthers' offense caught fire in the second quarter with an 18-0 run, which included three more 3-pointers from Gribble and one from Diop. During the run, Gribble had nine points, Diop had five and junior center Kalista Walters had four. The offensive surge helped Pitt reach its largest lead of the half (32-18) with 2:28 remaining before the break. The Yellow Jackets used a 6-0 run to cut the Panthers' lead to 32-24 with 1:13 before halftime, but a layup at the buzzer from Kauai Bradley brought Pitt's lead back out to double figures (34-24) going into the locker room.
Georgia Tech opened the second half with two layups (34-28), but back-to-back triples from Gribble silenced the Yellow Jackets (40-28) at the 7:15 mark. The Panthers ended the third quarter in a decisive manner, using a 7-0 run over the final 2:56 to reach a 15-point lead (51-34) heading into the final period. Sophomore guard Jasmine Whitney rolled in a layup at the horn to cap the run.
Gribble tied the school record with her seventh three at the 8:01 mark in the fourth quarter (54-38), however, the triple marked Pitt's final field goal of the contest. The Yellow Jackets out-scored the Panthers 24-14 over the final eight minutes, coming within three points (65-62) with 40 seconds remaining. Whitney and Gribble made a combined 3-of-4 from the charity stripe in the final 12 seconds to end the game with Pitt on top, 68-62.
