PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the Notre Dame/Joe Piane Invitational and Chatham Eden Hall Invitational, respectively.

PANTHER DEBUTS
Friday's competition will be the first of the 2017 season for 2016 NCAA Championship participant Gillian Schriever, as well as 2017 USATF 5000m Junior National Champion Nick Wolk. Last year, Schriever became the first Panther cross country runner to compete at the NCAA Championship since 2004. Over the summer, Wolk championed the 5000m at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships with a time of 14:26.54 and competed at the Pan-Am Junior Championships in Peru.

Competing for Pitt Friday at the Notre Dame/Joe Piane Invitational at Burke Golf Course will be:
- Women in the 5K Blue Division (1 p.m.): sophomore Sam Shields, juniors Miranda Salvo, Gillian Schriever and Makenzie Zeh and seniors Kelly Hayes, Amy Kelly, Joslin Sellers, Melanie Vlasic and Anja Weiler
- Men in the 5 mile Blue Division (1:45 p.m.): freshmen Andrew Burroughs and Zach Lefever, sophomore Jackson Morton, juniors Sebastian Curtin, Ryan Hughes, Matt McGoey and Nate Sloan and seniors Billy Caldwell and Aaron Lauer

PANTHER DEBUTS

- The Panthers will be taking on a combined 11 nationally-ranked teams across the men's and women's Blue Division races at the Notre Dame/Joe Piane Invitational Friday, with 19 total teams receiving votes in the USTFCCCA weekly poll.
- On the women's side will be No. 1 Colorado, No. 3 New Mexico, No. 7 NC State, No. 9 Arkansas, No. 12 Notre Dame, No. 26 Ohio State, (RV) Air Force, (RV) Baylor, (RV) Eastern Michigan, Alabama, California, Florida State, Texas, TCU, Tulane, Utah, UTEP, Washington State and Weber State.
- For the men will be No. 4 Colorado, No. 11 Washington State, No. 13 Southern Utah, No. 29 Eastern Michigan, No. 30 NC State, (RV) Air Force, (RV) California, (RV) Eastern Kentucky, (RV) Michigan, (RV) Texas, Alabama, Baylor, Butler, Florida State, Iowa, New Mexico, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UTEP and Weber State.
LAST TIME OUT
- Ryan Hughes led the men to their first team win of the season at the UB Stampede Invitational Friday, Sept. 15, in Amherst, N.Y. The Ashburn, Va., native paced the Panthers by placing second overall with a personal best 8K time of 24:43.6. He was one of six from Pitt to place in the top 15 of the race.
- At the women's last meet, the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational (Sept. 8), senior Kelly Hayes led the way for Pitt, placing third. The Pearl River, N.Y., native completed the 6K course in a personal-record tying time of 21:17. Hayes' classmates Joslin Sellers and Amy Kelly were next to finish for Pitt, taking 19th (22:04) and 22nd (22:10). Rounding out the top 25 were juniors Makenzie Zeh (23rd, 22:13) and Miranda Salvo (25th, 22:19).
UP NEXT
- The Panther women will return to Schenley Park for the CMU Invitational Saturday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. The event will be the cross country program's Panthers Unite event, in which all Pitt student-athletes are encouraged to attend.
- Both squads will compete at the Pre-National Invitational hosted by the University of Louisville Saturday, Oct. 14.
