Pitt Drops ACC Battle with League Leader
DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team fell to No. 4 Duke on the road, Sunday afternoon, suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the ACC-leading Blue Devils in Durham, N.C.
"We had a great first half and I thought we were dangerous at times. I thought we were doing a great job defending and just staying in the game," said head coach Greg Miller. "One mistake led to the first goal and we were just defeated and not as sharp after that heading into halftime.
"In the second half I think the heat took over and we just started to sit back a little more and allowed them to get on the ball. We weren't as aggressive defensively as we were in the first half and that led to more opportunities for them. Overall, I am very pleased with the effort against a very good team today. I thought we had a good showing and account of ourselves. We had some very good moments but we still have gaps in our play. But, I like the momentum we have."
Duke took the lead in the 39th minute, as a rebound in the box made way for a goal by Ashton Miller to put the Blue Devils up 1-0. Duke would take that lead into the half as the Blue Devils out-shot the Panthers 12-3 in the first period.
The nation's fourth-ranked team would extend its lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute, as another rebound in the box resulted in the sixth goal of the season for Kayla McCoy. Duke would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the game, as the Panthers fell to the Blue Devils 2-0.
Offensively, Sarah Krause led the way for Pitt, tallying two shots. Duke out-shot Pitt 25-6 in the contest, and took 10 corner kicks, compared to four for Pitt. In net, Katelyn McEachern was busy, making seven stops. With the loss, Pitt falls to 3-5-2 (0-2-1 ACC).
UP NEXT
The Panthers return to Ambrose Urbanic Field for three straight, hosting No. 11 Virginia (Oct. 1) followed by meetings with Syracuse (Oct. 5) and No. 24 NC State (Oct. 8).
