Panthers Host Longwood Friday in Home Opener

Pitt, Lancers Clash for Fourth Time in Program History
PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's soccer team hosts Longwood Friday, Sept. 1 in its home opener at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex. Action between the non-conference foes is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
Friday's home match will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra and may be viewed on WatchESPN/WatchESPN App. Live stats will be provided through PittsburghPanthers.com.
PROMOTIONS
- The first 200 fans at Friday's game will receive a Pitt soccer scarf voucher and a free schedule magnet.
THE SERIES
- The Panthers lead the all-time series 2-0-1.
- The two teams last met a year ago in Farmville, Va., which resulted in a 2-1 win for Pitt.
SCOUTING THE LANCERS
- Longwood opened the 2017 season Friday, Aug. 25 with VMI, which resulted in a 2-2 double overtime draw.
- The Lancers finished the 2016 season 8-12-1 overall and 3-5-0 in the Big South.
- Longwood is led by head coach Jon Atkinson who is in his 15th season at the helm of the program.
LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt opened the season Friday, Aug. 25 on the road in Columbus, Ohio.
- The Panthers first took on Ohio State, dropping a 1-0 decision. The Buckeyes netted the game-winner in the 90th minute.
- Pitt then took on James Madison Sunday, Aug. 28 and also fell 1-0. The Dukes struck in the 34th minute and the Panthers were unable to bounce back.
- Through the two games, Pitt attempted 21 shots, eight of which were on goal.
2017 PANTHERS AT A GLANCE
- Pitt returns 12 players from a year ago and added 12 new faces to the roster.
- Highlighting the returners is senior defender Bryce Cregan, junior defender Tom Moxham and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mikal Outcalt all of whom played significant minutes in 2016.
- The large group of newcomers consist of six players that joined the squad for the 2017 spring season, while the remaining six joined the team in the fall.
- Vidovich added two transfers to the 2017 roster in senior defender Robby Dambrot from Akron and redshirt senior defender Mauriq Hill from Clemson.
VIDOVICH ENTERS SECOND SEASON
- Head coach Jay Vidovich enters his second year at the helm of the Pitt soccer program and his 23rd season overall on the sidelines.
- The two-time NSCAA Coach of the Year has produced over 35 professional players, 21 All-Americans and five ACC Player of the Year honorees.
- Prior to Pitt, Vidovich spent 21 seasons at Wake Forest where the team captured the 2007 National Championship, made four College Cup appearances and claimed five ACC regular season titles.
CREGAN, PEREZ NAMED CAPTAINS
- Senior Bryce Cregan will captain the team again in 2017, this year with the help of junior Javi Perez.
- Cregan, a strong defender, started and played in 16 total games for Pitt last season, registering three shots on goal.
- Perez, a native of Valencia, Spain, brings years of invaluable experience to Pittsburgh after training with Valencia CF, one of the top youth academies in Spain's La Liga.
- Perez joined the Panthers in January of 2017.
A LOOK AT THE 2017 OPPONENTS
- Pitt will play eight teams ranked in the top-25 preseason United Soccer Coaches poll.
- Eight of those opponents were also NCAA tournament teams a year ago, with two reaching in the Final Four and four to the Elite Eight.
- The Panthers will host nine opponents at Ambrose Urbanic Field, which will feature four ACC foes and long-time rivals West Virginia and Penn State.
