Kardesler Nets First Career Goal in Win
PITTSBURGH – Vildan Kardesler's goal in the 101st minute lifted the University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team to its second consecutive win, as the Panthers defeated Duquesne 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
In a defensive battle, Kardesler finally broke the stalemate less than a minute into the second overtime, as Bel Van Noorden grabbed the assist. The win is the second straight to open the season, the first time Pitt has rattled off back-to-back wins to open year since 2009.
"It was a real gut checking weekend for us, we're still trying to work through playing better soccer, but we did a much better job today," said head coach Greg Miller. "We had a fast start and created a lot of great opportunities, but unfortunately couldn't put things away early on. If you give Duquesne an opportunity long enough, they might capitalize on it. The game got stretched and we started to allow them a little more possession, a little more opportunity at goal and we dodged some bullets.
"Credit our kids for hanging in there and really persevering. What a beautiful play from Bel to Vildan. It's great to get out with a win."
Pitt's offense was hot from the start, outshooting Duquesne 9-3 in the opening period and 16-9 overall. Kardesler led the way with six shots, two on goal, while teammates Taylor Pryce (5) and Sarah Krause (4) each peppered Duquesne keeper Kyra Murphy, who was forced to make eight saves. Pitt net-minder Katelyn McEachern earned her second straight win, both shutouts, as the redshirt freshman is now 2-0 on the season and in her career.
Kardesler joins teammate Juelle Love, as back-to-back freshmen have recorded game winning goals to open the year.
"This freshman class is fantastic," added Miller. "Great talent, great human beings and it's great for their confidence early on to be contributing in that way. We'll get the older ones involved and they'll get theirs but it's great that we have some variety because you never know where the goals are going to come from, and we need them."
With the victory, Pitt improves to 9-4-0 all-time against its cross-town rival, snapping a two-game skid against the Dukes.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will hit the road for a pair of games in Cincinnati, Ohio, taking on Cincinnati (Aug. 24) and Xavier (Aug. 26). Pitt will return to Ambrose Urbanic Field Aug. 30, kicking off a two-game homestand.
