Gillian Schriever's 13th-Place 10K Finish Highlighted Day 2 of NCAAs
EUGENE, Ore.—A 25-year-old Pitt track & field school record was broken on Thursday evening at the NCAA Championships as Gillian Schriever ran the fastest women's 10,000 meters by a Panther, earning second team All-America honors in the process.
Competing at Oregon's historic Hayward Field on a nationally televised ESPN2 broadcast, Pitt sophomore Schriever placed 13th in the NCAA women's 10K with a time of 33:50.03, breaking Carmela Mariana's quarter-century-old mark of 33:54.30 in outdoor track's longest event.
"Gillian had nothing to lose and she ran with a purpose tonight," Pitt women's distance coach Adam Bray said. "She was with the pack for the majority of the race, letting others drop off towards the end after the faster pace at the start. At that later stage in the race, it's survival mode for everyone, and she showed her toughness by passing several runners and finishing well inside the top-15."
"I was really pleased with my time and finish," Schriever said. "But to break to school record with my personal record at the NCAA Championships made it extra special."
After Schriever's accomplishment, the Pitt 4x400 meter relay squad consisting of Morgan Harvey, Quadaisha Newkirk, Danielle Leaks and Desiree Garland competed and placed 24th with a time of 3:41.92 as those four Panthers each became Honorable Mention All-Americans.
Earlier in the day, Andin Fosam concluded her season with Honorable Mention All-America honors after finishing tied for 23rd in the hammer throw. The junior became the first Pitt women's thrower since 2005 to appear at the NCAA Championships.
"It was an alright day for our six women that competed; there was some good and some bad," Pitt track & field head coach Alonzo Webb said. "Gillian ran an impressive race and showed a lot of guts, and we're all very pleased for her. And the 4x4 relay team didn't race as well as we had hoped, but they all gained valuable experience that will benefit them in the future. For them and Andin to have qualified for the NCAA Championships was a great accomplishment itself."
Tomorrow, Pitt senior Desmond Palmer will have two chances to race for a national title as the Panthers conclude action at these 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Palmer, Pitt's first two-time NCAA finalist in the same season in over 15 years, is set to compete for collegiate gold in the 110-meter hurdles (9:12 p.m.) and the 400-meter hurdles (9:57 p.m.). Both races will be shown live on ESPN2 and via the WatchESPN app.
