Juniors Post 20-Point Performances in Loss to Duquesne
PITTSBURGH – Redshirt junior forward Yacine Diop and junior center Kalista Walters combined for 43 of Pitt's 53 points as Pitt women's basketball (2-1, 0-0 ACC) suffered its first loss of the season to Duquesne (2-1, 0-0 A10), 66-53, Thursday night at Petersen Events Center.
Diop had a team-high 22 points on 9-of-20 shooting, recording her first 20-point outing since scoring a career-high 26 at Michigan in December 2015. Walters followed with 21 points on 9-of-14, and added nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals in a career-high 40 minutes played. It was her first 20-point game since scoring 22 points in the 2015 edition of the City Game as a freshman.
Junior Danielle Garven grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds but struggled on the offensive end, with just two points on 1-of-8 from the field. Sophomore Jasmine Whitney dished out a team-high seven assists but also lacked offensive production at 1-of-7 shooting. Apart from Diop and Walters, the Panthers made a combined 4-of-30 (.133) from the field.
The teams traded leads seven times during the first seven minutes of the game, but an 11-2 Duquesne run to close the first period gave the Dukes a 22-14 advantage heading into the second.
Despite a scoreless streak for the Panthers from the 9:03 mark until a Diop jumper at 2:40, the teams evened out with 12 points apiece in the second quarter. The Panthers entered the locker room with an eight-point deficit, down 34-26.
The Dukes tripled the Panthers' offensive output in the first four minutes of the third (12-4) to reach a largest lead of 16 (46-30) with 5:27 remaining in the period. Pitt whittled it down to a 12-point margin after six consecutive points scored by Walters (48-36), but the Panthers faced a 15-point hole with 10 minutes left to play.
Walters continued to perform offensively for Pitt as the Panthers chipped way to just an eight-point deficit to overcome with 3:28 to go. However, cool free throw shooting from Duquesne kept the Dukes ahead, eventually sealing the win at 66-53.
