PITTSBURGH – The Pitt track and field teams will get their 2017-18 indoor season underway with the annual Blue-Gold Meet at Charles L. Cost Sport Center and Fitzgerald Field House, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2.
The meet will be the programs' Panthers Unite event, where all Pitt student-athletes are encouraged to attend and cheer on their fellow Panthers.
"Our track and field schedule is designed with the intent on preparing for the conference, regional and national competitions," Panthers head coach Alonzo Webb said. "We are competing in a variety of meets that allow us the opportunity to prepare for those targeted competitions. During the indoor season we establish this intent in the heart of our schedule. With the trip to Clemson in South Carolina for the Bob Pollock Invitational we will have the chance to see some of the best competitors in our conference on one of the nation's fastest tracks. We follow that trip up with by returning to South Bend Indiana for the Meyo Invitational at Norte Dame. These two meets will allow us to compete our athletes in the high intensity environment that the post-season meets will present to us, and hopefully offer our athletes opportunities to qualify for the Indoor National Championships in March."
The initiative is designed to showcase all 19 Pitt varsity sports teams together. One event from each of the school's 14 programs' schedules (combining men's and women's cross country, men's and women's indoor/outdoor track and field and men's and women's swimming and diving) was designated as the Panthers Unite promotion.
On the following weekend (Dec. 8-9), Pitt will travel to Kent, Ohio, for the Kent State Golden Flash Gala. After the New Year, the Panthers will compete at the Nittany Lion Challenge in University Park, Pa. (Jan. 13), and YSU College Invitational in Youngstown, Ohio (Jan. 19).
The Panthers will get a preview of the ACC Indoor Championships site when they travel to Clemson, S.C., for the Bob Pollock Invitational (Jan. 26-27). Pitt will then visit Notre Dame for the Meyo Invitational (Feb. 2-3), and close the regular season at the SPIRE Invitational in Geneva, Ohio (Feb. 9-10).
The USATF Indoor Championships will be Friday-Sunday, Feb. 16-18, in Albuquerque, N.M. Clemson will host the ACC Indoor Championships from Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 22-24. The NCAA Indoor Championships will be in College Station, Texas (March 9-10).
On the men's side, Jamaree Murray and Ken Brosier return as All-ACC Indoor second team honorees in the men's 4x400m relay. For the women, Gillian Schriever is back as an All-ACC second team member in the 5000m, and Andin Fosam as second team in the weight throw. Additionally, Schriever and Fosam were each All-ACC Indoor Academic Team members for the 2016-17 season.
"We are really excited about this year's team and believe they will rise to any challenges they are faced with," Webb said. "For our athletes to handle academics and our travel schedule the way they do we know they are the right kind of people for this program, and you can expect academic and athletic success from this group."
