PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team fell to crosstown rival Duquesne by a score of 2-0 Sunday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Pitt outshot the Dukes 19-10, but was unable to get behind Duquesne goalkeeper Kyra Murphy as the Panthers fell to 0-1-1 on the season.
"I thought our second half was better than our first half and we were able to create several chances and from that point I thought it was positive," said head coach Greg Miller. "But, we didn't do a good enough job of capitalizing on those moments. We've got to get better in the final third, we've got a lot of youth out there and we spent a fair amount of time on it, but we've got to go back and give these kids some more coaching and some more repetition and be clearer about how we want to play.
"We've got to do a better job of keeping the ball and moving the ball. I thought our play, at times was too slow and allowed Duquesne to close some things down. We just have to be a little bit better in all areas."
Pitt had a trio of solid opportunities in the 32nd minute of play, as a pair of shots from Siobhan McDonough and one from Arielle Fernandez were stopped by the Duquesne defense. Play stayed in Pitt's favor over the next few minutes before Duquesne would swing the momentum in its favor.
Duquesne's Casey Aunkst took a free kick in the 38th minute, placing the ball perfectly fro a header by Malea Fabean which snuck in the top right corner over the head of goalkeeper Taylor Francis to give the Dukes a 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers would have a few more scoring chances to end the half, but found themselves down 1-0 at the break.
In the second, the Pitt offense continued to pressure the Dukes, as Hanna Hannesdottir forced Murphy to come up with a pair of big saves.
The Dukes would extend their lead in the 81st minute, ultimately sealing the game. A scramble in front of the net ensued when Katie O'Connor snuck a pass to Cydney Staton who sent a dribble into the left corner of the net.
Pitt was unable to muster any significant scoring opportunities as time ticked away, an ultimately fell by a score of 2-0.
With the loss, Pitt falls to 0-1-1 on the season. Sunday's contest was the first of a three-match homestand for the Panthers as they will welcome Colorado College on Thursday before hosting Xavier Sunday.
