DELAND, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team remains undefeated at the Stetson Invitational after defeating the host team, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand, Fla.
"We had two solid team wins today because we showed up with great effort in all phases of the game - pitching, hitting and defense," head coach Holly Aprile said. "I really liked our approach at the plate all day."
Following a historic game one where freshman Sarah Dawson tossed Pitt’s [10-4] first perfect game, sophomore Kayla Harris picked up her fifth win of the season over Stetson [9-6] to move to 5-4 on the season.
Harris struck out eight batters, gave up just a single walk in the game and now owns a 1.53 ERA on the season.
"Kayla [Harris] and Sarah [Dawson] were outstanding and our defensive communication was very good," Aprile said.
Offensively the Panthers broke the bats out again, posting eight runs on 10 hits. Redshirt senior Maggie Sevilla hit her fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning, while sophomore McKayla Taylor finished the game going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Redshirt senior Shelby Pickett, senior Jenna Modic and Sevilla all chipped in two hits apiece. Senior Kathryn Duran was walked in all three of her at-bats.
Modic, Sevilla and Taylor finished the day with batting averages above .550 and each put together four or more hits.
PITT 8, STETSON 0 [SIX INNINGS]
• The Panthers defeated Stetson, 8-0, in six innings of play with Harris earning her fifth win of the season.
• After two scoreless innings of play, Pitt put up three runs in the third to jump ahead first. Duran led off the inning with her first walk, and advanced to third on a sac bunt and a single by Pickett. Both Panthers touched home after Sevilla singled up the middle in the next at-bat. Sevilla didn’t remain on the bases long as a single by Taylor allowed the Calif., native to cross the plate, giving Pitt a 3-0 lead.
• The Panthers tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth, three of which came from Sevilla’s home run. Freshman Olivia Gray singled to reach base, while Duran walked yet again prior to Sevilla hitting the long ball. A fielding error in the outfield by the Hatters on a Taylor single, set up an RBI single by Modic. Pitt led 7-0 after four complete innings of play.
• Following a scoreless fifth, Pitt sealed the game in the sixth, scoring a single run to end the game an inning early. Pickett led off with a single down the left field line and scored on a Modic single to right field.
