DELAND, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team concluded the Stetson Invitational with a perfect 5-0 record, after defeating Providence 11-4 in the Panthers’ final game of the tournament.
Freshman Sarah Dawson relieved senior Jenna Modic in the middle of the fourth inning to pick up her fourth win of the season.
Sophomores Giorgiana Zeremenko and McKayla Taylor, along with redshirt senior Maggie Sevilla each had three hits in the game. Taylor hit Pitt’s lone home run of the game, a two-run jack over the right center wall, to end the game with four RBIs.
On the weekend, Sevilla cranked out nine hits in 18 at-bats for a .500 average. Taylor added eight hits while Zeremenko finished with six.
On the mound, sophomore Kayla Harris finished with a perfect 3-0 record and did not let a run score. Dawson finished the tournament 2-0 with a perfect game.
PITT 11, PROVIDENCE 4
• The Panthers were victorious over Providence for the second time this weekend after outscoring the Friars 11-4. Dawson earned her fourth win of the season.
• Pitt scored four runs in the top of the second inning to jump on the board first. Sophomore Erin Hershman led off the inning with a single, and moved around the bases on Zeremenko’s first of three hits. After advancing to third on a sac bunt by senior Kathryn Duran, Zeremenko walked home on an illegal pitch by Providence. Freshman Olivia Gray reached base next, and was brought around by Sevilla. Sevilla touched home for the last run of the inning as Taylor brought her around on a double to right center.
• Providence answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Panthers’ lead to two. Back-to-back doubles scored the Friars’ first run of the inning, while the second run came two batters later on a single to the shortstop.
• Pitt added a lone run in the third, as once again Hershman scored on a double by Zeremenko.
• The Panthers had another big inning in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs to extend its lead to 9-2. Redshirt senior Shelby Pickett hit an RBI single to left to score Zeremenko from second for run number five. Duran scored Pitt’s sixth run on a wild pitch. A two-run homer by Taylor concluded the scoring inning.
• Pitt added two final runs in the seventh inning, while the Friars put up a single run in both the sixth and seventh.
DAWSON AND SEVILLA EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS
For their outstanding play during the Stetson Invitational, Dawson and Sevilla were both named to the all-tournament team. Dawson’s no-hitter and solid time on the mound led to her selection, while Sevilla’s powerful offense and stellar defense gave her the go-ahead.
UP NEXT
Pitt will travel to San Diego, Calif., for its spring break trip where the squad will play seven games in five days. The Panthers are scheduled to take on Utah Valley, Portland State, Grand Canyon, Texas A&M, St. Joseph’s and tournament host San Diego.
