AKRON, Ohio - The Pitt women's soccer team (6-1-1) scored three goals along with another strong defensive showing to claim a 3-0 victory, the Panthers' fifth straight, over Akron on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium.
"We set a goal about how we wanted to defend today," said head coach Greg Miller. "There are still some things we allowed them to do, but overall I thought we did a good job. I thought our bench really provided a spark for us today. That's something we're going to need going forward. We've got some players that can come in and change the game."
Pitt outshot Akron 23-5, in addition to a corner kick total of 7-1, to dominate possession and maintain a steady attack throughout the contest. The Zips (3-2-1) managed just three shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Taylor Francis recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season and seventh of her career. She now sits alone in fifth in total shutouts in program history.
The Panthers notched the game's first goal in the 29th minute. Freshman Kaylee Rabatin collected her second score of the year by cleanly finishing a ball chipped into the box by fellow freshman Sarah Krause.
Pitt's second score came off the foot of Krause, who fired a successful shot from inside the box in the 70th minute to tally her second goal of the year as well. She was assisted on the play by Rabatin and senior Roosa Arvas.
The Panthers posted their third and final goal on a header from Arvas. Junior Emily Pietrangelo sent a through-ball in from the left side, which Arvas expertly finished. With the goal, Arvas is now tied for first place among the program's all-time point leaders (51).
Next up, Pitt will open conference play on Sunday, Sept. 20, when it hosts NC State for a 1 p.m. tilt at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
