CARY, N.C. - After splitting yesterday's doubleheader, the University of Pittsburgh baseball team (4-8, 1-2 ACC) fell to No. 1 Virginia (12-1, 2-1 ACC), 10-3, today at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The Cavaliers used a five-run first inning to secure a lead they would build on and never relinquish.
"Today was very disappointing," said head coach Joe Jordano. "We made too many mistakes against such a great baseball team. Coming off of yesterday, where I thought we played with great intensity and did some great things, we just didn't follow it up. Hopefully as a team we can learn from that. We got a win on the road, and we have to come back this week and play five ballgames in the next seven days. It's going to be an interesting run."
Making his third start of the year for the Panthers was Marc Berube (0-2, 4.20) against Virginia's left-hander, Brandon Waddell (1-0, 1.80).
Berube finished his day early in the fifth, surrendering seven hits, a walk, and five earned runs over 4.0+ IP to receive the loss. Four of thefive earned runs, five of the hits, and the walk all came in the first inning. Over the following three innings, Berube settled down considerably and allowed just one hit, a solo home run to Matt Thaiss, and faced just one batter over the minimum during that stretch before Danny Pinero reached to open the fifth.
After the teams combined for just four runs in eighteen innings of play the day before, today's first inning alone doubled the series' offensive production to that point.
Pitt jumped in front early, scoring three runs in the opening stanza. Jacob Wright and Charles LeBlanc both reached base on infield singles before Alex Kowalczyk came aboard on an error to load the bases with no outs. Frank Maldonado and Aaron Schnurbusch were then consecutively hit by pitches, two of four HBP for Pitt on the day, to bring in the contest's first runs. Manny Pazos sent a fly ball to left to plate the Panthers' third run of the inning which would be their last of the day.
Virginia then answered in their half of the first, pouring on five runs on five hits, including two triples. They would not trail again for the remainder of the game, belting three home runs in the process.
The Panthers would have opportunities to chip into the lead, but stranded a total of 12 men on base. Both teams were charged with four errors.
Relieving Berube in the fifth was Matt Pidich, who last appeared in Game One of the series where he earned the save. Pidich, who has been very reliable this season, did not allow a hit through two scoreless innings of relief work, striking out one.
Also appearing in relief were Isaac Mattson, Rich Condeelis, and Nick Parnell. The trio combined to throw 2.0 innings of relief, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out three.
Virginia plated a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to finalize the day's total.
The Panthers will return to action this Tuesday, March 10, when they will host Niagara at 1 p.m. in the 2015 home opener.
