Pitt Recognizes 393 Student-Athletes at Annual Scholar-Athlete Breakfast

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh hosted its annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Breakfast to honor 393 student-athletes and 68 cheer and dance team members, the highest amount of scholar-athletes ever represented in an academic year. The awards presentation was held in the Connolly Ballroom of Alumni Hall on the Pitt campus.
"We applaud the record number of University of Pittsburgh scholar-athletes that we are recognizing this year," said Mike Farabaugh, Director of Academic Support Services for Student-Athletes. "The University community should be extremely proud of the student-athletes who represent all of us through their commitment to both athletics and academics."
Pitt Alumni Association President, Jeffrey Kondis, an accomplished corporate marketing professional and adjunct professor, was among the special guests. Lisa Auld, Director of the Cathy & John Pelusi Family Career and Life Skills program, served as Master of Ceremonies.
Artie Rowell, president of SAAC and junior on the Pitt football team, made a special presentation to the Pitt Alumni Association for hosting the breakfast.
Pitt;s Academic Support Services staff presented the Blue and Gold awards to the student-athletes who maintained academic excellence throughout the year. In addition to these awards, special recognition was given to Elijah Zeise, freshman football player. Zeise received the Fred Koloc writing award for excellence in writing composition from the English department.
"We have 475 student-athletes at the University of Pittsburgh and 393 of them earned at least a 3.0 grade-point average this past year," said Pitt Acting Athletic Director Dr. Randy Juhl. "That is a tremendous indication that our young men and women are working hard to excel in each endeavor they undertake. They are great representatives of our university."
In closing, Juhl also announced Pitt's Academic Team Awards. The women's swimming and diving team earned the overall Top Academic Team honor, as well as the Top Women's Team award. The Top Men's Team was awarded to the men's soccer team for the sixth consecutive year. The baseball team received the Most Improved Team award.
The scholar-athletes will be recognized at halftime of the Pitt vs. Boston College men's basketball game this Tuesday evening, February 25, at 9 p.m.
