Pitt Splits Doubleheader with St. Francis to End Fall Season

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team ended its fall season Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader match-up against St. Francis (PA) at the Petersen Sports Complex where the Panthers lost the first game, 4-2, but bounced back to win the second game 4-0.
Game One (L, 2-4)
The Panthers notched nine hits in the first game but were unable to hold off the Red Flash as they went on to drop game one ,4-2.
The game began slow as the two teams were scoreless through the first three innings. St. Francis (PA) got on the board first in the fourth inning, scoring two runs. The Red Flash tacked on two more in the top of the sixth to lead 4-0.
Pitt answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs on two hits but was unable to make the comeback. Redshirt junior Shelby Picket knocked in one run on a sac fly while sophomore Kaitlin Manuel added the other with a single to the outfield.
Freshman pitcher Kayla Harris notched five strikeouts and only walked one batter in seven innings of play.
Game Two (W, 4-2)
Game two was a success for the Panthers as they won 4-0 behind senior pitcher Savannah King. King threw five strikeouts while keeping the Red Flash scoreless in seven innings of play.
Three innings went by without a run scored by either team but that all changed when the Panthers got on the board first in the fourth inning. Pickett led off in the fourth with a double to the outfield and advanced on a fielder’s choice. Pickett scored after Jenna Modic crushed a ball to the outfield and picked up a double of her own. Modic also scored after two singles moved her around the bases. Pitt led 2-0 at the end of the fourth.
The Panthers added their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to clinch the win. Redshirt junior Maggie Sevilla and senior Carly Thea both scored for Pitt. Sevilla scored on a Thea single while Thea crossed the plate when the Red Flash attempted to catch a Pitt player stealing second.
Pitt ended their fall season 7-1 with doubleheader sweeps against Slippery Rock and Penn State, and single wins over Akron and Youngstown State.
