PITTSBURGH - In front of scouts from 22 Major League Baseball teams, Pitt baseball players had the opportunity to showcase their skills at the annual Pro Day on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at Charles L. Cost Field.
Position players ran through fielding drills and batting practice while the pitching staff showed off their best repertoire of pitches from the mound.
The Panthers have put together a good reputation of grooming players into draft picks during head coach Joe Jordano's tenure over the past 17 years at Pitt. Since taking over the reins at Pittsburgh in 1998, 31 players have been drafted, including three in each of the past two years and a total of 11 since 2011. Most recently, pitchers Luke Curtis, Joseph Harvey and Matt Wotherspoon were taken in the 2014 MLB Draft. Curtis was a 18th-round selection by the Milwaukee Brewers while Harvey and Wotherspoon both went to the New York Yankees in the 19th round and 34th round, respectively.
This year, the Pitt baseball team currently features two players that were previously selected in the MLB Draft. In 2012, senior outfielder Boo Vazquez was drafted and the following year freshman Charles LeBlanc was the youngest player picked at age 17.
Pitt continues its fall schedule with intrasquad games each weekend, culminating with the annual Navy/Vegas World Series from Oct. 18-21.
