Cowgirls Top Panthers in Straight Sets

MUNCIE, Ind. – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (8-4) fell in straight sets to the Wyoming Cowgirls (11-2) on Saturday afternoon (16-25, 18-25, 18-25) in Pitt’s second match of the Ball State Invitational at Worthen Arena.
The Cowgirls defense stifled the Panthers, forcing Pitt into a .028 hitting percentage for the contest (23K – 20E – 108TA). Jasmine Dittrich led the team with five kills and Margy Acton had a team-best 12 digs.
The Cowgirls scored the first five point of the contest before back-to-back kills by Lindsey Zitzke and Jessica Wynn put Pitt on the board. At 8-3 in favor of the Cowgirls, Wyoming recorded back-to-back service aces to surge ahead 10-3 as Pitt used its first timeout of the opening set.
The Panthers climbed back into the set with a 5-0 run, led by Dittrich (two blocks) and Monica Wignot (two kills), which closed the gap to 11-9. However, the Cowgirls scored seven of the next eight points to regain control at 18-10. The difference would be too much for the Panthers to make up as Wyoming took the first set 25-16.
Wyoming jumped out to another early lead to open the second set, grabbing a 13-5 advantage courtesy of a Pitt attacking error. The Panthers then used their second timeout of the set down 17-8 after a kill by Wyoming’s Camille Coffman. Pitt though, continued to fight, and used a 3-0 spurt to climb within five at 23-18, but the Cowgirls wrapped up the set with back-to-back kills for a 2-0 advantage.
With the third set locked up at four apiece, Wyoming once again took control with a 5-1 run. The Cowgirls continued to stretch their lead and Pitt would only be able to climb within four points (11-7) for the remainder of the set as Wyoming closed the match with a 25-18 third set victory.
