Panthers have lost 3-of-4
Acton has led the team in digs every match she has played this season
Jasmine Dittrich and Alexa Campbell each notched 10 kills to lead the Panthers' attack. Campbell and Lindsey Zitzke recorded double-doubles as Campbell added 12 digs to her stat line, while Zitzke finished with 31 assists and 12 digs. Margy Acton had a match-high 21 digs and the Dukes' Allison Foschia had a match-best 11 spikes.
Duquesne held the offensive advantage, hitting a .270 (44K - 10E - 126TA), compared to Pittsburgh's .172 clip (47K - 21E - 151TA). The Dukes also held a 9-4 advantage in blocks.
It was a highly competitive first set that featured 15 ties and eight lead changes. After Jasmine Dittrich notched her fourth kill of the set to put the Panthers ahead 22-21, a Dukes kill followed by back-to-back Pittsburgh errors gave Duquesne a 24-22 advantage. The Dukes would ultimately close out the set on a kill by Mary Henry for a 25-23 victory.
With the Panthers leading 7-5 in the beginning of the second set, the Dukes responded with a 7-1 run, giving Duquesne a 12-8 lead. Pitt climbed within one at 17-16 on a kill by Mechael Guess, but Duquesne would rally for the next two points which stretched the lead back to three at 19-16.
Out of a called Pittsburgh timeout, the Panthers scored five of the next seven points to come within one point at 22-21, which resulted in a Dukes timeout. Duquesne though, was able to contain the Panthers' momentum and recorded two kills, sandwiched in between a Pitt hitting error, for a 25-23 victory and a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Jessica Boddy got the Panthers off to a fast start by registering four kills and a block to give Pitt a 10-8 lead early on in the third set. However, a 6-0 Duquesne run ensued which put the Dukes ahead 14-10. The Panthers though, answered with a 4-0 run of their own, capped off by a kill from Alex Phillips which forced Duquesne into a timeout with the frame dead-locked at 14-14.
As the two teams continued to trade points, back-to-back Duquesne blocking errors gave Pitt a two point advantage at 20-18. But with the Panthers leading 22-19, the Dukes seized momentum and scored six of the final seven points (four kills - out of rotation - Pitt hitting error) to win the third set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
The Panthers open conference action this weekend with road contests at Seton Hall on Sept. 22, and at Rutgers on Sept. 23. The Scarlet Knights (14-1) and Seton Hall (11-1) sit atop of the conference heading into league action. First serve for both matches is at 2 p.m.
