PITT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Women's Soccer: Roosa Arvas. Arvas played a role in six of Pitt's seven goals on the week, finishing with one goal and five assists in Pitt's undefeated 3-0 week. The freshman provided the game-winning goal in Pitt's 3-1 win over Duquesne. She was also named the Big East Rookie of the Week for her efforts. (Read more).
OTHER TOP PITT WEEKLY PERFORMANCES
Volleyball: Margy Acton. The senior libero was named to the Mortar Board Premier All-Tournament Team after she reached double-digit digs during every contest with her high of 16 digs came against George Washington. Acton is now just 73 digs shy of becoming the 10th player in program history to reach the 1,000 dig milestone. (Read more).
Women's Soccer: Morgan Sharick. A junior defender, Sharick scored two goals and added an assist in Pitt's 3-0 week. All three plays were results of corner kicks. She leads the team with three goals. (Read more).
Volleyball: Setter Lindsey Zitzke tallied 74 assists and contributed 21 digs, 10 kills and five blocks in three matches. (Read more).
PITT PLAY OF THE WEEK
Men's Soccer: Freshman Nick Wysong dribbled 15 yards down the right side of the field, maneuvered past two defenders then passed to Ryan Myers, who scored Pitt's game-winning goal to defeat Howard, 1-0. Wysong was named the Duquesne Invitational co-Most Valuable Player. (Read more).
PITT PANTHER WEEKLY NOTES
*The Pitt men's soccer team opens its home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. against St. Francis, Pa. at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Panthers will field a team of 17 underclassmen.
*Pitt volleyball opens its 2012 home schedule with the Pittsburgh Panther Invitational this weekend at Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt welcomes Butler, Coastal Carolina and Howard for matches beginning on Friday evening and concluding Saturday night.
*Under the direction of first-year coach Greg Miller, the Pitt women's soccer team is off to a 4-1-0 start to its season, its best start in three years. The Panthers have won three consecutive matches. Freshman Roosa Arvas leads the team in points (eight) and junior defender Morgan Sharick has scored three goals.
*Pitt's cross country team competes in its first invitational of the year on Saturday at the Duquesne Duals at Schenley Park. The race begins at 9:30 a.m.
