PITTSBURGH—Playing its first-ever full game under the lights at Vartabedian Field at the Petersen Sports Complex, the University of Pittsburgh softball team slipped 10-5 in the second game of its doubleheader against Connecticut Saturday evening.
Pitt (24-22, 7-11 Big East) out-hit UConn (21-19, 9-7 Big East) 13-12, while stranding nine runners on base.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, senior Niki Cognigni tallied a RBI-single that scored freshman Carissa Throckmorton and tied the game.
The Huskies would then add five more runs on three hits and a pair of Panther errors in the third inning.
Pitt chipped away at the UConn advantage when Throckmorton garnered a RBI single in the bottom of the third that sent freshman Maggie Sevilla home. Sevilla led off the frame with a single to left field and moved to third with a base hit from senior Kelly Hmiel and a fielder’s choice to junior Holly Stevens.
Later in the fifth, senior Yvette Bravo smacked her team-leading ninth double of the season off the right center field wall, allowing Hmiel and Stevens to score. Bravo would also cross home plate, thanks to a base hit from Cognigni in the inning. The Panthers pulled within two, 7-5, at that point.
Connecticut, however, scored one more run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Freshman Alexa Larkin (7-8) suffered the loss on the mound, giving up five earned runs on 11 hits. Larkin would strike out four in the game, while walking one.
Pitt and UConn will play the third game of the series at noon on Sunday, April 22.
