PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men’s soccer team hosts a pair of contests this weekend, beginning with cross-town rival Duquesne on Friday, Sept. 16 at Ambrose Urbanic Field at the Petersen Sports Complex. The match - slated as ‘Pack the New Petersen’ - begins at 5 p.m.
Pitt (1-4-1) entertains Richmond on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 3:30 p.m. for Fan Fest. The women’s soccer team hosts USF on Sunday at 1 p.m. prior to the men.
The Panthers look to collect their first win at their new on-campus home confines after dropping two at last weekend’s Pitt/Nike Invitational. Friday’s meeting marks the eighth between Pitt and Duquesne. The teams first met during the 1996, but have not faced off since 2008. The Panthers lead the all-time series against the Dukes, 5-0-2.
Friday’s game against Pitt marks Duquesne’s third straight game on Pitt’s home field – Ambrose Urbanic – and their first true road game. Duquesne compiled a 0-2 mark at Pitt/Nike Invitational on Sept. 9 and 11 with losses to Bowling Green and Air Force.
The Dukes, 2-2-1 on the season, are paced in scoring by Simon Gomez (3 goals).
Pitt’s meeting with Richmond on Sunday will be the first in program history. The Spiders are 0-3-1 on the season playing all of their matches on the road. UR has been out-scored, 20-4, in its four previous outings. Prior to the showdown with Pitt, the Spiders face West Virginia on Friday evening.
Richmond competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference along with Duquesne.
The Panthers have used five different starting line-ups in their six games the season. Sophomores Nico Wrobel and Robert Iledare, freshman Manny Morgado and senior Shane Flowers are the only four players to start all six games this season.
Pitt used a starting line-up in its last game versus Bowling Green comprised of nine underclassmen, seven of those freshmen.
Following this weekend’s action, the Panthers open Big East play on Friday, Sept. 23 at Rutgers.
