HARRISONBURG, Va.—Junior Ashley Cuba pushed a scoring shot across the goal line in the 58th minute to give the Pitt women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Delaware Sunday afternoon at the JMU Soccer Complex. Pitt notches its first win of the year and improves to 1-2-1 on the season while Delaware drops to 1-2-0.
The match marked the second contest of the JMU/Fairfield Inn by Marriott Invitational for both teams. Pitt dropped a 6-0 decision to host James Madison in Friday’s contest. The all-tournament team will be announced after the JMU-Stony Brook match.
Pitt’s game winning goal came at the 57:29 mark when freshman Ali Matisse headed down a ball toward the net where Cuba poked the ball past the goal line for the score. Cuba, who has led the Panthers in both goals and points in each of the last two seasons, now has 15 career goals and ranks tied for third among leading goal scorers in program history. The record is 19 held by Ashley Habbel from 2006-09, followed by Cande Ruiz (18 goals from 1998-2001) and Cuba and Netta Agredano (15, 2000-03). Her 34 career points currently rank tied for fourth in Pitt women’s soccer history. The record is 47, held by Ruiz from 1998-2001 and followed by No. 2 Habbel (45 from 2006-09) and No. 3 Jennifer Kritch (39 from 2005-07).
Pitt goalkeepers Kristina Rioux (first half) and Nicole D’Agostino (second half) combined for the shutout victory. The duo teamed for three total saves. It was Pitt’s first shutout since it blanked Connecticut on October 24, 2010. Pitt has registered shutout victories in each of its last four wins dating back to last season.
Delaware outshot Pitt 15-12 but the Panthers fired six shots on goal. Katelyn Ruhe and Matisse both finished three shots apiece while Katelyn Lippert had two.
Pitt is back in action next weekend when it hosts the Pitt Soccer Classic at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The classic features four teams including Pitt, Penn State, North Carolina State and Colorado College. Pitt opens the tournament against Colorado College on Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and will play either Penn State or North Carolina State at either 11:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. on Sunday.
