Amistade Swipes Her School Record 65th Base

PITTSBURGH—Senior Ashley Amistade set the career stolen base record in the second game of today’s doubleheader, however the University of Pittsburgh softball team fell to Penn State 2-0 at Vartabedian Field in the Petersen Sports Complex. The Panthers dropped to 23-7, while the Nittany Lions improved to 16-12.
Amistade stole her 65th career bag in the third inning when she swiped second base, breaking Sheena Hellon’s all-time school record. Amistade was on base after her bunt single moved senior Reba Tutt to third.
“Ashley is always looking to go,” Head Coach Holly Aprile said. “This record is a wonderful accomplishment for her.”
On the year, Amistade is 19-for-21 in steals and leads the Big East in that category.
On the mound, freshman Karlyn Jones (8-3) was pitching a perfect game till the sixth inning when the Panthers committed an infield error and then gave up two hits. One of those hits was a home run over the right field wall that scored two and gave the Nittany Lions a 2-0 advantage in the contest. Jones had nine strikeouts through the first 16 batters.
Jones returned in the bottom of the seventh and struck out all three batters, including two looking. She ended the game with a career-high 12 strikeouts and no walks. Jones also tied teammate Alyssa O'Connell for the season best in a single-game contest. O’Connell threw 12 strikeouts against South Carolina State on March 11.
“Overall we played well,” Aprile added. “Karlyn had a great game, we just didn’t get the timely hits.”
Pitt registered extra-base hits from Tutt and sophomore Holly Stevens, and out-hit Penn State 4-2 overall.
The Panthers will travel to Kent State on Wednesday, March 30, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
