BOTETOURT, Va.—Despite a comeback effort in the seventh, the University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Ball State on the second day of the Radford Invitational, held at Botetourt Sports Complex. The Panthers slipped to 15-6 on the year, while Ball State improved to 14-10.
Pitt attempted a comeback in the seventh. First junior outfielder Yvette Bravo hit a single and was replaced on base by junior Jessica Rhodunda. Next Amanda Heitmeier followed with a single of her own to put two runners on base. Pinch hitter Keli Gaynor would then drive in Rhodunda with a two-out single that trickled into left field. However, the Cardinals held off any further scoring for the Panthers with a strikeout on the next at-bat, stranding both base runners.
Ball State scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning when their catcher hit a solo home run. The Cardinals added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth when they capitalized on two Pitt errors.
Freshman Karlyn Jones (7-2) pitched six innings, allowing three hits and one earned run in the loss.
The Panthers out-hit Ball State, 5-3, in the contest. They face Delaware at 3 p.m.
