UNC Tumbles Over Pitt 195.650-193.550

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Pitt gymnastics team fell to EAGL opponent North Carolina 195.650-193.550 at Carmichael Arena on Sunday evening. It now falls to 3-7 on the year, and 0-6 in EAGL competition.
The score marks the third consecutive time that the Panthers have posted a score of 193.000 or better this season.
The Panthers posted a season-high 48.700 on bars, and tied their season best 48.550 on floor for the second time this season.
Five Pitt gymnasts met or broke their career-high scores while in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Freshmen Kori Macdonald (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie) and Katie O'Rourke (Springfield, Va./J.E.B. Stuart) each broke their career-high score on vault for the third consecutive week. Macdonald posted a 9.750 to best her previous high score, while O'Rourke collected a 9.800 to accomplish the same feat.
Each of their scores helped Pitt to capture the vault title. O'Rourke came in second place with her score, while veteran Alicia Talucci (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) claimed third in the event with a 9.775.
In a season-best 48.700 on bars, four Pitt gymnasts posted scores of 9.725 or better: Maya Ketner (Okemos, Mich./Okemos), Amy Varela (Derwood, Md./Magruder), Brittney Harris (Easton, Pa./Easton) and Alyssa Adrian (Cary, N.C./Green Hope).
Two gymnasts in Ketner and Kelsey Ainsworth (Broken Arrow, Okla./Union) broke career-high marks on bars with a 9.725 and 9.650 respectively. Harris tied her personal best 9.775 this afternoon for the second time this season.
A 9.800 from Adrian landed her a third place finish in the event, and the lone Panther to take a top-three finish on bars. It is the second time in three meets that Adrian has collected a top-three finish on bars, including an event title in last weeks meet against Maryland.
UNC swept the beam with four scores of 9.800 or better. Talucci's 9.775 performance on the apparatus was the best for the Panthers.
On the floor, Pitt tied its season's best score for the second time this season with a 48.550.
A pair of Pitt gymnasts each set season-high scores while another pair broke personal records. Jen Liberato (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) matched her season-best 9.700 on floor for the second time this season, while Ainsworth posted a 9.600 for a new record in her junior campaign. Freshmen Ketner and O'Rourke each set career-highs with a 9.725 and 9.800 respectively.
Liberato was the sole all-around competitor for Pitt this afternoon. She posted a season-high 37.975 to finish third out of all gymnasts.
The Panthers will continue to travel down south to take on SEC opponent Auburn on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. central time.
