PITTSBURGH—Pitt’s softball team has returned to classes for the fall semester, and will begin Fall Ball this week. However, September is also important because it is recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which spotlights children battling cancer and urges advocacy and fundraising for cancer research and awareness.
Last spring, the University of Pittsburgh softball team adopted five-year-old, Leah Royer, from Western Pa., who was diagnosed with cancer in February. The softball team welcomed the Royers into the Pitt family and have enjoyed spending time with them while learning about Leah’s brave ordeal.
Despite battling a Juvenile Pilocytic Astrocytoma (JPA) brain tumor, she has remained a beautiful and happy girl with a bright smile that lights up the room. Leah has been an honorary ball girl for the Pitt softball team and recently started the first grade.
