Blue Wins Blue-Gold Scrimmage

PITTSBURGH—Senior Amy Town recorded a double-double, as Pitt’s women’s volleyball team hosted its annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage at Fitzgerald Field House, this afternoon. Blue won 3-2.
Town tallied 16 kills and 12 digs in the match. She also added three block assists and two aces for Blue.
Playing beside Town, setter Allyson Hodnik assisted on 52 kills, while adding seven digs, four block assists and three kills. Hodnik also set senior Imani Harper on 10 kills with a .318 hitting percentage.
On the Gold side, senior Alyssa King led with 20 assists, while freshman Mali’e Yoon chipped in 15. Four Panthers recorded eight kills for Gold, including junior Keisha Leggs, sophomore Alexa Campbell and freshmen Brittany Lhota and Krista Whitewood.
Defensively on the Gold, freshman Margy Acton led all with 20 digs. However, seniors Melanie Feldman and Brittany Fallis chipped in 14 and 13 digs for Blue, respectively.
In the first set, sophomore Michelle Walker and senior Rachel Kalberer each recorded aces for Blue. Kalberer’s pushed Blue ahead 16-12.
Later, an ace from senior Tara Rohall of Gold tied the set at 21. However, kills from Town and Kalberer would give Blue a 23-21 advantage and force a Gold timeout.
Coming out of the break, Harper ended a long volley and set Blue up for set point (24-21) with a kill from Hodnik. Kalberer then recorded her second kill of the frame and gave Blue a 1-0 lead in the match.
Town led Blue with five kills and six digs, while Fallis added five digs.
Next, Leggs recorded a solo block and then later combined with Campbell to tie the second game at 19. Leggs would then record a kill and push Gold ahead 20-19 on the next possession. Freshman Maria Nicholas assisted on the play.
Blue tied the set at 21 with a kill from Kalberer. However, sophomore Jenn Katona would give Gold back-to-back points and a 24-23 advantage. Whitewood then sealed the set for Gold with a kill from Yoon. Whitewood had five kills in the second set for Gold.
After trailing 9-4 in the third set, a block from Katona and Lhota would close the gap to 13-12 in favor of Blue. The two teams stayed close through the next few points, as an attack error gave Gold an 18-17 advantage.
Later, Hodnik set Town for one of her four kills in the set, lifting Blue to a 22-20 advantage. Five serves later, Harper would end the third set with a kill and give Blue a 2-1 lead in the match. Sophomore Alex Phillips recorded four kills in the Blue victory.
The fourth set opened with Yoon serving. She gave Gold a 4-0 lead, including an ace. Blue responded with a 9-2 run of its own, that included a kill from junior Lauren Hartman.
Still rallying, Hodnik recorded an ace in the game to put Blue up 16-9. Later Hodnik set Harper for a kill and a 21-14 advantage.
Campbell aided Gold in an attempt to hold off Blue’s charge with a kill, followed by a block assisted by Lhota. The score was 22-19 after the block however a 3-1 run from Blue would end the set.
In the fifth and final set, Gold led 8-4 thanks to a block assist from Leggs and King. The teams switched sides and Gold went on a 7-0 run to take the set. Whitewood earned a solo block and Leggs had three kills in the game.
Pitt opens its 2010 campaign on Friday, Aug. 27, at Dayton, as part of the Ohio State Tournament. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m.
